Our Namesake
The Fray Angélico Chávez Chapter proudly bears the name of Fray Angélico Chávez (1910-1996), a Franciscan priest, historian, artist, author, and one of the most influential genealogists of New Mexico.
Through his landmark work, First Families of New Mexico, Fray Angélico Chávez documented the histories of hundreds of Hispanic families whose roots extend to the earliest Spanish settlements beginning in 1598. His research opened the door for generations of descendants to discover their ancestry and preserve their family stories.
Today, thousands of descendants continue to rely on his research as the starting point for discovering their own family history.
Founded in 1998, the Fray Angélico Chávez Chapter proudly continues his legacy by helping individuals research their Hispanic genealogy, preserve family histories, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Colorado, New Mexico, and the American Southwest.
